An Analytical Solution for Horizontal Infiltration in Highly Selected Porous Media: Anchoring in Sorptivity and Van Genuchten-Mualem Parameter

This is an updated version of a previously posted article that had been published on June 17, 2025 on this blog. Celso Luiz Prevedello Abstract This work proposes an analytical model specifically for highly selected porous media (n>10), using a continuous sigmoidal moisture profile to describe the transition zone during horizontal infiltration. The parameter n represents an adjustment factor of the van Genuchten (1980) model for the soil water retention curve, and is related to the uniformity of pore distribution. The parameter n>10 of van Genuchten suggests a very uniform pore distribution. The specialization for n>10 addresses the growing demand of modern engineering for synthetic and designed materials with very uniform pore distribution, widely used in industrial filtration, draining pavement, technical substrates and advanced geotechnical systems. The model was developed specifically for materials with characteristics similar to very well selected sands, such as the porou...
Between Tombs and Stars: Art and History in Nighttime Cemetery Tours Celso Luiz Prevedello Guided nighttime tours in cemeteries are becoming increasingly popular in various parts of the world, offering a unique and multifaceted experience that goes beyond a simple tourist visit. These events not only spark curiosity for the unusual but also provide a deep immersion in the history, art, and symbolism that permeate these places of eternal rest. Cultural Aspects Cemeteries are true open books of a community's cultural history. They narrate, through tombs, gravestones, and mausoleums, the trajectories of individuals who, in life, played significant roles in society, from illustrious figures to humble citizens who, in less visible ways, contributed enormously to the development of the city. During a guided nighttime visit, participants have the opportunity to learn about local personalities, historical events, and traditions that shaped the identity of the city or country. These tours o...
STABILITY OF GALAXY CLUSTERS: A TRIBUTE TO FRITZ ZWICKY                                                                                                                                  Celso Luiz Prevedello Introduction Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally bound structures in the universe. Observations by the Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky in 1933 indicated that the visible mass of the clusters, composed of galaxies and intracluster gas, was insufficient to keep these structures bound together. This led to the hypothesis of a significant amount of invisible mass, which he called "dunkle Materie" (dark matter),...
